Courses Taught

PVS 5632 “Vaccines: Mechanisms of Immune Protection”

The focus is on several different approaches to inducing prophylactic immunity in the host. Both traditional and modern molecular approaches to vaccine design will be discussed. In addition, the mechanisms employed by pathogenic microbes to avoid hosts' immune responses will be examined in the context of vaccine design. The students will gain an appreciation for the transition from basic research to practical applications. Also offered as ANSC 306.

PVS 5201 “Microbiology of Atypical Bacteria”

An in-depth presentation of current information on medically significant atypical bacteria, with emphasis on molecular aspects of pathogenesis.

Research Interests

  1. Molecular biology of mycoplasmas. Cloning, expression and sequence analysis of genes encoding regulatory and virulence determinants. Modulation of gene expression by regulatory proteins.
  2. Mycoplasma genomics, microarray (expression) analysis, proteomics.
  3. Pathogenic mechanisms of mycoplasmas. Mechanisms of attachment; cytadherence molecules and host cell receptors. Investigation of variably expressed cell surface proteins.
  4. Vaccine Development. Immunologic and genetic means of analysis for the detection and speciation of mycoplasmas.
